Winning is having success over something. Winning does not necessarily mean there’s a trophy in my hand or my opponents are unhappy. Having a win is beyond someone telling you “congratulations you made!”. You may not even be congratulated. To win could be having your morning routine done every day without wavering or completing your long time project. Regardless of what winning is to you, I’m positive it wraps around “advancement”. The four simple cycle to consistently win would help you with any advancement you desire.

Advancing starts from conceiving an idea, taking actions, evaluating the results of the actions and maintaining any positive outcomes that come from the results. In this article I want to explain the cycle to consistently win to you so that we can all win together. This cycle begins with your thoughts and ends with maintenance of the results of your thoughts.

Conceiving an Idea

Everything you see around you today is centered around an idea or thought. Someone thought of a cell phone,  electricity, computer, cars etc. Every successful and not successful project starts with conceiving an idea. The best thing you can do when you are not doing anything is to think. Think of solutions to a problem, think of innovating an existing situation and just think. Conceiving an idea does not have to be in a closed and dark room. An idea can be conceived while you are working on something – maybe cleaning or taking a walk.

I’m writing this post on a noisy bus to Washington DC from Virginia. Before I started writing, I thought of several ways of making road trips more fun among travelers. I thought of several ways to encourage interaction between humans while sitting on the same bus. Our brain is constantly reading the situations of things around us and producing ideas from these situations. There are tons of ways to conceive an idea (I will cover this in another post). After an idea is birthed, taking action is the next move in the cycle of success.

Taking Necessary Action

After you have reviewed and researched your idea, you have to get ready for some actions. Once you are ready to go, make an action item and start crushing each step. There are tons of ideas conceived but will never be seen or heard of because of lack of action. There are several hindrances that can prevent an idea from be “actioned”. From absence of finance, lack of time to lack of commitment and several others but oftentimes these reasons can be “walked around”. Some actions are truly expensive to take. They are expensive in terms of time and dedication. However, don’t give up your desire or goals because failure to take simple actions. There’s nothing as embarrassing as seeing someone else doing what you refused to do or what you considered impossible. Go take actions today!

Evaluating the Results of Your Actions

Taking actions does not necessarily confirm success. Until you evaluate the outcome of your actions and can account for some rewards, you can’t consider your idea to be successful. Few years ago, I did a “side business”. The reception from customers was great, the process was smooth and I was happy. Unfortunately, I found out that I had spent a lot of time, energy and money on this project. The profits didn’t surpass my investments. Despite a smooth process, I didn’t like the kind of success I had. I wanted financial success and possibly a continuity. If I didn’t evaluate the result, I may have celebrated the little success and continued to provide such service without knowing the losses. Evaluation helps you to check the status of your success and more importantly what can be done to improve the process.

Maintaining the Good Result

Success should not always be a one-time thing. Creatives have to be constantly winning else regression would be the next thing they would experience. Look at the history of chain store or restaurants around you. They started somewhere, reviewed the success experienced and thought it would be a good idea to expand. The success phase is not complete if you can’t maintain and use the model elsewhere. This does not mean you should just keep spreading the model. You have to restart the cycle every time to ensure success. Walt Disney did not put Disney World in all the states or cities in America because he and the current team running the business know that some places are not ready for it (some states would not attract the success they have had).

As you think about your next idea, ensure you think beyond the immediate success and definitely think about continuity. There are scenarios whereby one-time success is all you need but in such cases momentum (ability to pick something else and go win) should be expected. The success starts with and from your mind, then followed by the moves you make, evaluation of these moves and management of the overall process.
